Grapes help protect and care for the liver
It is rich in antioxidants and helps the elimination of toxins.
The liver performs many vital functions for the body, such as digesting food, storing energy, eliminating toxins and distributing nutrients. It also purifies the blood and generates bile, which works in the breakdown of fats and is useful in the assimilation of fat-soluble vitamins. It also plays an important role in the storage and release of glucose according to the needs of the body; it processes hemoglobin to use its iron content and regulates blood clotting.
However, the liver is permanently exposed to the development of diseases such as hepatitis, which is caused by viruses. Other conditions affecting this organ may be the result of excessive consumption of alcohol or drugs, says the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Renal Diseases.
According to this institution, a long-lasting injury or scar tissue (a scar) in the liver can cause cirrhosis. A possible sign of liver disease is when the skin turns yellow, known as jaundice. Normally, bad living habits, the intake of toxic substances, medicines and liquor are the causes of liver conditions, which lead to the limitation of the functions of this organ.
In this context, what is recommended, according to specialists, is to eat a healthy diet in which the consumption of fruit, vegetables and water predominates, and avoid the intake of alcoholic beverages. These foods are rich in antioxidants and fibers that help their protection.
One of the fruits recommended to care for the liver is grapes. Information from the research institute Mayo Clinic indicates that it has a high content of antioxidants such as resveratrol and flavonoids that, in general, protect people’s health. These antioxidants are found mainly in the peel, stem, leaf and seeds of grapes and not precisely in the pulp.
However, the amount of these compounds depends on many factors, such as the class of grape, its geographical origin and how it is processed. “Dark red or purple grapes tend to have a higher antioxidant content than white or green grapes. Similarly, the level of antioxidants in wine, such as resveratrol, also varies, with higher levels in red wine”, says the aforementioned institution.
In addition, these fruits have detoxifying properties that allow the liver to be cleansed, facilitating the elimination of toxins and avoiding the development of liver problems. They are also good for the kidney because they enable the elimination of uric acid thanks to their diuretic properties, according to an article published in the newspaper La Vanguardia, in Spain.
Body Mente portal information indicates that, in addition to containing 80% water, its calcium (15 milligrams per 1000 grams) and other alkaline elements, stimulate the liver facilitating the balance of the acidity of the blood. It helps to clean it and allows it to flow better.
Another good thing that is attributed to it is that it helps treat inflammatory problems, so it can contribute positively to improve liver health in case you are in that condition.
By having diuretic effects, the grape helps to eliminate in a natural way the excess of liquids retained in the body and favors the expulsion of waste products and toxins accumulated in different organs such as the liver.
